Musicians regularly hire artists to design a collector’s edition of old albums to revive them for a new generation. As Kate Bush’s album ‘The Red Shoes’ was originally released in 1993, I considered how now would be a good time to design and produce a hypothetical collector’s edition.
I was most inspired by vintage fairy-tale illustrations.
LYRIC BOOK
I made a lyric book to accompany my album cover so that it could act as a collector’s special-edition set. It would be printed as a double-sided concertina so that the illustrations would be continuous.
ITERATIONS
I decided to develop two options for my album cover so that I could get feedback on the preferred outcome. I thought the composition with the ballet slippers was too similar to the original album cover, so I had to find a way to make it different enough to be reflective of my own idea generation process. I struggled a lot with text placement here; I found referring to my album cover research and looking at their use of borders to be very helpful.
